Patient's often come to us concerned about the safety of teeth whitening treatments. While the treatment does involve the use of bleach, it is at a safe, concentrated level that poses little to no risk. While teeth whitening is a safe procedure, like all treatment there is the possibility of side effects occurring. These normally include tooth sensitivity, tender gums and/or a sore throat. Tooth sensitivity will often only last for a short period and will go away on its own however your dentist may recommend you use a sensitive toothpaste for this period. Tender gums and a sore throat will usually only be a side effect for those that use an at home whitening kit and overfill the bleaching tray. This causes the treatment to leak out onto gum or down the throat. Like sensitivity this irritation will go away by itself after a couple of days. Before you begin treatment, your dentist will assess your teeth and oral health to confirm that you are suitable candidate for whitening. This will help reduce any risk of side effects occurring.

While brushing and flossing are vital steps in maintaining top oral health, they are not enough on their own. It is recommended that you also visit your dentist every six months for a check-up and clean. Not only does this allow our dentists to remove any build-up of plaque and bacteria, it also provides them with the opportunity to identify any current issues and look out for any future problems that may occur. We believe that prevention is better than a cure and by coming for regular check-ups rather than waiting for an issue to arise, you are likely to save yourself a lot of time and pain.
Radiographic or X-ray examinations provide your dental team with an important diagnostic tool that shows the condition of your teeth, their roots, jaw placement and the overall composition of your facial bones. X-rays can help your dentist determine the presence or degree of periodontal disease, abscesses and many abnormal growths, such as cysts and tumours. X-rays can also show the exact location of impacted teeth. They can pinpoint the location of cavities and other signs of disease that may not be possible to detect through visual examination (such as changes in the jaw bone structure as a result of systemic disease). Finding and treating dental problems at an early stage can save time, money and unnecessary discomfort. At Brisbane Dental Studio we use state of the art Digital Radiography to minimise exposure.

At Brisbane Dental Studio we offer nitrous oxide (also known as happy gas) to our patients that feel nervous about their treatment. Rather than fully sedating you, nitrous oxide puts you in a relaxed, comfortable state. Patients simply have to breathe the gas through the mask and will quickly feel the relaxing effects and when used alongside regular numbing techniques it can make the procedure much more bearable.
Many patients will feel anxious to some degree about visiting the dentist and this will often be because they are worried about the pain. At Brisbane Dental Studio to aim to make all treatments as painless as possible however everyone feels pain differently and what may be painless to one person will be agonizing for another. As a result we offer a series of pain management options for our patients. Click here to read more about them.
At Brisbane Dental Studio we recommend the ideal time for your child to meet their dentist is 6 months after their first primary tooth has erupted, usually around 3 years of age. This allows your child to familiarise themselves with their dentist and feel comfortable in the dental environment before any real treatment is needed. It also provides the dentist and hygienist / Therapist an opportunity to assess your child's teeth and mouth and identify any future issues that could occur as well as teach proper brushing techniques.
This appointment is also a great opportunity for you to ask any questions that you have about looking after your child's teeth.
